Chapter Six

I still wasn’t sure if I heard her correctly. I knew my mouth was hanging open as this pissed-off goth girl glared at me, but I was having a hard time figuring out just what she was so mad about.

“What’s the problem?” I asked finally.

“You’re my problem,” she said, her upper lip curled in contempt. “Why did you do that? Why’d you jump into my fight? You made me look weak!”

“I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a Death Round match before, but you were going to die,” I said with a little heat.

She then said something that I didn’t expect.

“Did it ever occur to you that maybe I wanted to die?” she snapped.

That hit me like a bombshell, so much so that I didn’t know what to say. Once she said that, it all started to make sense to me. Why else would she attack a Blobber so randomly if she didn’t have a death wish of her own?

Most importantly, how could someone so incredibly talented wish for death? Was the System that terrible of an experience for her? If she was as good as she looked, I didn’t see how that could be the case.

I never got a chance to ask her because the game officials took Willow away at that point. She was still glaring at me as she left, which caught Brielle’s attention as the brunette caught up with me.

“Please tell me that my eyes are deceiving me,” said Brielle, glancing toward the gate. “But she almost looks mad that we saved her.”

“You could say that she was mad,” I said, nodding my head. “But it goes deeper than that. Something isn’t right there. I wonder what it is?”

On a whim, I decided to check out her Profile. My first glance at that told me nothing beyond the fact that she was a very talented gladiator on paper as well.

Way of the Mystic Warrior

As far as I was concerned, there was nothing that stood out here as being a detriment to Willow joining our team. Her stats were solid, and even her Special Ability was useful.

Way of the Mystic Warrior – This ability can only be used for the Mystic Warrior subclass. Any individual gains in Speed or Mana will be matched in the corresponding stat, keeping the two categories locked together.

From the way her Special Ability worked, Willow would be just as strong with her spells as she was fast. With there being no obvious weak spots in her Profile, I wondered about her school and her instructor. Perhaps they were to blame for the reason she wanted out of the System?

Either way, I wouldn’t find out right now. By the time I made it off the arena, a new Death Round match was set to begin. I found Sonia standing in our box with another Blobber,
